What Jacques Villeneuve really thinks about Eau Rouge
All racing drivers are adrenalin junkies, men whose desire for a thrill takes them into an arena where most people would not tread, but Jacques Villeneuve pushes the boundaries further than most.

The Belgian GP will be take place this weekend at Spa Francorchamps, a circuit that many adore and some hate. All the drivers have a great respect for this track, however, since it is a real driver's circuit.

For Jacques Villeneuve, Eau Rouge is F1’s most exciting corner, and both in 1998 and '99 he had heavy crashes at this ultra-fast chicane. In '99, instead of being shaken after his crash, he went: “Wow! This was my best accident, but Zonta’s crash was even more spectacular...”

Very few drivers risk taking the infamous Eau Rouge flat during qualifying. It is an uphill chicane which turns right and is also a blind turn - a turn that is taken at around 285km/h and that always gives the driver a great adrenaline rush.

"Hardly anyone does those corners flat," JV says, "so it’s pure pride to do it yourself. These are the only corners where, even though you know you can do it flat, your foot comes off the throttle by itself. So it is exhilarating to force yourself to control your foot and to tell yourself, 'No, it’s OK' and to actually go against what your body is telling you. It is quite an interesting feeling. If it benefits two tenths, it’s worth it. It will always gain you a little bit of lap time, but the risk you take is higher than the benefit."

For Villeneuve, who likes ‘playing’ with death at each and every occasion, Eau Rouge is like a present.

"Going through Eau Rouge flat, you feel mighty, alive, a breath of life. You feel all pumped up,” he says.

But if you don’t take it well and lose control of the car, as was the case with you in 1998 and '99... do you have time to think?

“Yes, you have time to think. The only thing you can do is hold the steering wheel as you wait for the impact and hope that you come out without anything broken.”

You have always said that you aren’t afraid. While you are in the car waiting for impact, don’t you feel a little bit afraid about breaking something or that something bad might happen to you?

“No, since you know that things like this can happen, but it’s a battle to survive, it gives you a fantastic rush and then since you cannot control the car any longer, you fall into destiny’s hands. I take is as it comes.”

Since we aren’t lucky, or unlucky, enough to experience the thrill of Eau Rouge, can you describe it for us?

“You turn right without knowing what you will find on the exit, in front of you there is a wall, this wall is too close, and you are just going up a slope. The car is hard to control and bottoms a lot whilst you’re going up. Then when you are on the exit of the corner, the car feels very light, as though it isn’t touching the ground. You either pass through it well or you crash."

Can you go flat through Eau Rouge?

Villeneuve says yes... but only sometimes !

These days just a handful of mighty corners can be found on the circuits of the world. Copse at Silverstone is one, 130R at Suzuka another. But nothing is quite like Spa's Eau Rouge, which is actually convenient shorthand for a series of bends.

Officially it is the left at the very bottom of the hill, while the incline and spectacular left sweep at the top are Le Raidillion. Locals prefer to use the latter name when talking about the complex.
Whatever it's called, for Jacques Villeneuve this daunting sequence of twists and turns represents the very essence of what it is to be a Grand Prix driver. For him it is the ultimate challenge. His eyes light up and the enthusiasm shines through as he tries to find the words to describe the sensation he experiences, rattling off the sentences as if he is mentally already flat in sixth.

"Yes, it is the best corner," he smiles. "It is fast, very fast, but it's also the layout. You're going downhill, it turns just a little bit left, and as soon as you want to change direction the track starts going up. It's completely blind, you see a wall in front of you, and you turn again. It's too tight for the speed you're actually going, and you shouldn't be able to go that fast through it.

"But because it goes up, you have a lot of downforce, and you just muscle through it, and wow, you get up through the other side. Then after being squished the car goes over a hump where you change direction again, and the car gets light and starts bouncing a little bit. So you just go in and somehow the car does the rest, and you just hang though it. You have to survive, and it's just fantastic."

But twice Jacques has failed to make it through. He crashed a Williams in practice in 1998, and famously totalled his BAR in qualifying in 1999. He has not been the only victim of this corner, but it is now inextricably linked with his name.

"I've crashed twice in the same spot, but that won't stop me doing it flat. Even when I crashed in '98, I still did it flat later. In '99 it was difficult to do than previous years, and I kissed the kerb on the inside. I was flat on that lap, until I got sideways. That was my second qualifying lap. Even after the first run I think I had the fifth quickest speed through there, and I only did one run. So that next lap was going to be really quick. Too bad!"

So what went through his mind when he realised that he had stepped over the edge?

"At first you think, 'OK, I'm a little bit sideways, but I'm catching it'. A tenth of a second later you try to look in the mirrors to understand where you're going to hit, how you're going to hit, and you brace yourself. In '99 I hit square backwards. In fact I rolled after hitting the wall. It didn't hurt. I think hitting forwards hurts more..."

It's difficult for the rest of us to understand, but Villeneuve does not worry about crashing. Of course, he doesn't want to injure himself, but his credo is that risks are there to be taken, and challenges are there to be met.

"It's part of racing. If you start thinking like that, if you start worrying too much, and not wanting to be at your maximum, your limit, then you should stop driving. OK, you don't want to do it flat on the first day - you want to get the car ready first, get the set-up perfect. But then you can't leave Spa not having tried it flat. That would be really, really disappointing."

No one understands Jacques better than Jock Clear, his race engineer since his first season at Williams in '96. Clear has a unique insight into what makes Villeneuve tick.

"Those corners are something he relishes," Jock explains. "That is the buzz that makes him do F1. OK, winning races and championships is always going to give you a buzz, but when he's not in a position to do that, there's got to be something for him. He's always looking to get the best out of the car in the high-speed stuff, and in 1996-97, on slick tyres in a very strong car, Eau Rouge was comfortably flat. And he enjoyed it. He would like to think that even with grooved tyres, with the progress that gets made on aerodynamics and that sort of thing, that we are still in a position to go through there flat."

Tyres and set-up are crucial when taking Eau Rouge. This year's tyres have much more grip, but one thing is certain - you can only attempt Eau Rouge flat in qualifying trim.

"In '98, he did it on grooved tyres, in '99 he obviously didn't achieve it, and last year the set-up wasn't right. But I think it's a measure of the car. All the mathematics add up to the fact that a modern F1 car will go through there flat, and he knows that. Obviously if you are flat, you actually have more downforce because you're going faster, and you also unsettle the car less by not lifting off. So by staying flat the car will often seem more stable than if you actually go though there slower. So you've really got to try it to know whether it will go through there flat," says Clear.

"But on a qualifying lap it's perhaps worth half a tenth, and the risks are enormous. We saw in '99 what damage it can do, and he was very lucky to walk away."

Villeneuve has indeed been fortunate. The fact that his father, Gilles, died during qualifying for the Belgian GP, albeit at Zolder, adds more eerie dimensions to his insistence on attacking the corner with such abandon.

But Clear says Jacques weighs up the risks.

"He's not stupid. Everyone who knows him knows that he is fastidious about safety issues. The cockpit is always being worked on - it's a bit of padding here, move that away because I can hit it in an accident - he is massively sensitive to safety issues. But his argument for that is that he wants to get everything as safe as possible in the cockpit, so he can take those risks. He has great faith in the safety structures these days, so he is prepared to test them to the limit."

After the '99 shunt it emerged that Jock had told his man on the radio that he would be a big girl's blouse if he didn't take Eau Rouge flat. That quaint English phrase is probably not well known in Canada, but Jacques needed no outside motivation.

"Absolutely, I was winding him up a bit," says Clear. "Some people questioned whether I was wise to say that. I'm a race engineer, I'm not a driver's psychologist. You've got to rely on the fact that he's in the car, and he knows how best to drive it. Yeah, I wind him up and get him motivated, but ultimately he is in control. He's always been good in the past at knowing what his limitations are. For someone who takes big risks in quick corners, he has actually had very few shunts of that sort of nature.

"But Eau Rouge is the one that has become a bit of a bogey for him. It's more of a worry than any other, because it's caught him out a couple of times now. You know that he's going to want to defeat it. He's not going to go in there this year and say, 'OK, I'll back off this time'. Then the corner's beaten him. If he thinks the car is capable, he's going to have another go at it. That's in him, I don't think there is anyone outside winding him up into taking risks that he's not prepared to take."

Eau Rouge tells you everything you need to know about Villeneuve.

"I see exactly the same thing in Jacques' skiing," says BAR team boss Craig Pollock. "There are certain challenges that he sets himself, that he's absolutely going to do. I think we've decided that this year he should do it, but we're going to give him so much downforce that he can put his foot flat down and go through at half the speed of the rest! That's what we should do, because he is going to try, no matter what happens. I'll be pissing in my pants all the way through to the end of the race..."

A Historia de Spa

Name: Spa-Francorchamps

Mineral water was discovered in the Ardennes hills by the Romans and the town of Spa was established. Russian Emperor Peter the Great was among those who dropped by to sip the iron-rich water for medicinal purposes. But drinking healthy water was a pretty boring occupation and so the locals opened a casino with the idea of helping the rich and famous to leave the contents of their wallets behind them in Belgium. When that gimmick began to wane, a local man by the name of Jules de Thier dreamed up the idea of holding car races to keep the visitors amused.

Racing in the Ardennes was not new. As early as 1902 there had been a Circuit des Ardennes. This was the very first closed circuit to be used. At the time all the major races were from city to city. This was the idea of Pierre de Crawhez and the first route covered 53.5-miles, running in a triangular circuit along the highways from the town of Bastogne to Longlier, 16 miles to the east, then south to Habay-la-Neuve before joining the main road back to Bastogne. In 1904 this was extended to 73.4-miles but then faded into history.

De Thier mapped out a much shorter track. It was triangular and ran along the country roads from just below the village of Francorchamps, down the valley of a stream called the Eau Rouge and then uphill to the crest of the hills at Les Combes and into a long curling downhill section through the village of Burnenville to the junction to Malmedy. From there it went down the valley floor to the hamlet of Masta and on towards the nearby town of Stavelot. Before getting there, however, the route turned back up the valley towards Francorchamps, passing through the hamlet of Blanchimont. It was remarkably fast and challenging and very quickly became a major venue for European racing with the Spa 24 Hours beginning that year and the Belgian Grand Prix in 1925. The winners in those early years highlighted that this was a track for the highest caliber drivers like Antonio Ascari, Tazio Nuvolari and Rudi Caracciola. During the war racing stopped but the circuit became part of the battlefield during the Battle of the Bulge, the German counterattack against the invading Allies in the winter of 1944-45.

Racing returned to Spa in 1947 with Frenchman Jean-Pierre Wimille winning for Alfa Romeo and into the 1950s and 1960s the track once again highlighted the best known names: Alberto Ascari and Juan-Manuel Fangio. In the 1960s Jim Clark was dominant with four consecutive victories in the Belgian GP.

Safety, however, eventually became an issue. Spa was just too fast. In 1960 Stirling Moss was seriously injured and two young British drivers - Chris Bristow and Alan Stacey - were killed during the Belgian GP weekend. In the 1960s the Spa 1000km became the track's third big event of the year with local hero Jacky Ickx winning five times.

A nasty accident at Spa started Jackie Stewart's crusade for better safety and Spa was a victim, the Grand Prix moving to the characterless Nivelles circuit near Brussels. During the 1973 Spa 24 Hours three drivers were killed. Jochen Mass tells a horrifying story of sharing a car with Hans Stuck and during one of the pitstops at the night, Stuck shouted to him over the noise that he should "look out for body parts at the Masta Kink". Mass arrived there expecting to see bits of car all over the road but was appalled to discover it was bits of a marshal.

Plans were laid to rebuild the track and, in an effort to retain the spirit of the old circuit, most of the original area around Francorchamps was retained. A section of carefully-designed track was built linking Les Combes with the return leg of the old circuit near Blanchimont. The resulting circuit was greeted with much enthusiasm when the F1 circus returned in 1983 and the track has been an important part of the World Championship ever since, despite difficulties with the local authorities over tobacco advertising and the track surface, which in June 1985 broke up so badly that the Belgian GP had to be postponed until September. There were still accidents at Spa, notably the sportscar crash at Eau Rouge in 1985 which claimed the life of rising German star Stefan Bellof.

In the late 1980s Ayrton Senna was the established winner at Spa with five wins in eight years but in the 1990s it was Michael Schumacher who emerged as the star with four wins in six years.

"It is without doubt the best circuit in the world," Schumacher says. "The kind of atmosphere you get at Spa is something akin to the old Nurburgring. It is the only place which still has this quality and atmosphere. Eau Rouge is really the most tremendous corner. It is like flying downhill and seeing a big mountain in front of you. You get the feeling that you are driving into the road and then you go up and it is a sensation which is probably the best you can experience and the most satisfaction you can have as a racing driver."

Craig Pollock and Jacques Villeneuve have refuted claims by Gerry Forsythe that the Canadian racer was offered a 50 million dollar contract to return to the CART series in 2003. Reports in the ‘Le Journal Montreal' claimed that Villeneuve was offered a very lucrative deal to return to the Players Forsythe Team but turned down the offer claiming he wanted more money.

The report stated that the deal, organized between Players and BAR, would have seen him compete in CART for the final season under British American Tobacco's sponsorship before anti tobacco legislation came into play at the end of 2003. After that the driver would return to F1 and his current BAR team for 04 and 05. Said to be part of BAT's plan to go all out in their final year in the series, Craig Pollock claims the offer has never been made, either verbally or in writing.

"All this is false. We never received an offer, either verbally or in writing,” he said. “I was very surprised and immediately called Gerry Forsythe and also Bob Bixon (president of BAT), and they were as surprised as I was. It is clear that Jacques has a concrete contract with BAR for 2003. There were perhaps internal discussions between BAR and British American Tobacco as during the GP of Montreal, Players asked me whether Jacques would be interested in doing a final year in CART. I simply answered that it would be necessary to talk with BAT and BAR because he is under contract with them. That is all."

Jacques was also asked about the deal and he too denied that it was ever made and if it was, he would have given it serious thought as you don't pass up that amount of money lightly.

“For six months I have been saying that I have a contract for next year,” he said. “I never received a proposal for anything. There were rumours saying that it would be a good idea, but there was never an offer. It makes me laugh. If a proposal like that was made, I would
think about it, but it was not.”

A McLaren surpreendeu no primeiro dia dee treinos livres em Spa Francochamps. A equipe ingles colocou seus dois pilotos nas duas primeiras colocações, como Kimi Raikkonen à frente de David Coulthard.

As Ferrari vieram logo em sefuida, com Michael Schumacher e Rubens Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher e Jenson Button fecharam os seis primeiros. Felipe Massa foi o 17º e Enrique Bernoldi não treinou.

Hoje decidi por minha bandana roxa (que por sinal me deram de presente, pq eu sou uma moça que vive combinada e claro que deveria ter algo q combinasse com uma cor tão cheguei!) e já me chamaram de várias coisas: D. Florinda, Cigana e agora Portuguesa pode? (e por um cara que usa umas camisas de cetim preta, aquelas de pagodeiro) é o fim da picada!

JV and Pollock reject big buck offer

Jacques Villeneuve and his manager Craig Pollock have turned down a $50 million multi-year offer for the former to return to CART next year to drive in 2003 and then compete for two more years at BAR, it was reported by “Le Journal de Montreal” on Tuesday.

Villeneuve had been linked to moving back to the States next year to drive for Gerry Forsythe’s Player’s team and it was hoped this latest offer would seal it but Pollock wanted more money. The former BAR Team Principal had always maintained it would take a “golden contract” for the move to become a reality.

The offer, put together by the Player’s team, Villeneuve’s current employer British American Racing and the backer of both those firms British American Tobacco, would have seen the 31-year-old drive for one season as part of a Player’s three-car line-up next year, and then return to British American Racing in 2004 and 2005.

Gerry Forsythe’s squad must cancel its Player’s sponsorship at the end of next year due to new rules on tobacco sponsorship in 2004. Officials had hoped to recruit Villeneuve to compete for the team in a “final hurrah” before the exit of Player’s, while BAR Boss David Richards was keen to see the move go ahead because Villeneuve’s salary demands were affecting the car development budget.

But Pollock said a contract could only be signed if Villeneuve was paid $19 million a year for ’04 and ’05 as well, taking the three-year package to $57 million. The three parties were quick in refusing Pollock’s counteroffer.

‘We would have loved to have been able to count on the services of someone like Jacques Villeneuve for a year,’ Forsythe told Le Journal. ‘It would have been very good for Player's and for the CART series.

‘Unfortunately, Pollock asked for even more money. It's too bad because we know the idea interested Jacques, who doesn't mind the idea of returning to race in North America where he would have been able to win races.’

And Forsythe doubted whether Villeneuve, who won the 1995 Indycar series with Player’s, would be able to secure similar payments when he was looking for new opportunities after next season.

‘I'm not sure he will receive the same kind of offer from an F1 team at the end of his contract in 2003,’ he said.

Villeneuve is still contracted to BAR for next year.

The British American Racing competitor Jacques Villeneuve has said that even though he has a patchy record at the track, he always loves going back to Spa-Francorchamps just to experience its daunting and thrilling lines.

The Canadian, whose best finish was second place six years ago on debut, considers Spa the last genuine drivers’ track left in Formula One, and has tested it to the limit with major crashes at the Eau Rouge kink over the years in which he has escaped every time unhurt.

‘I love this track,’ the 31-year-old enthused. ‘I've got memories of big crashes at Spa and actually I've never had a good race there, but I have had good qualifying. It's one of the last high-speed circuits that we have and it's a very long lap, but you really feel like you're going somewhere. It's got a good rhythm and it follows the layout of the land.

‘You turn because there's a mountain so there's a reason for the layout. It's not like most modern tracks, which are like parking lots that you put cones around to create as many corners as you can with no logic or rhythm. This one has both. It's like you're driving to your house in the mountains.

‘Eau Rouge is one of the most awesome corners of any circuit. It's fast - very fast. You're going downhill, it turns just a little bit left, and as soon as you want to change direction the track starts going up. It's completely blind, you see a wall in front of you, and you turn again. It's too tight for the speed you're going actually and you shouldn't be able to go that fast through it.

‘It's just fantastic.’

Team-mate Olivier Panis, yesterday buoyed by news that he would be joining Toyota next year, concurred with Villeneuve about the circuit.

‘Spa is one of the best circuits in the world,’ the Frenchman said. ‘It's a real racing circuit and has some fantastic high-speed corners. This track has the tightest first corner in Formula One, La Source, and it can make for a very interesting start as 22 cars fight for position into a second gear, 60 km/h, right-hand hairpin.’

‘There are a couple of long straights that lead into slow corners so Spa offers more overtaking possibilities than the last race in Hungary. Braking is very important, particularly when we slow down from Blanchimont into the Bus Stop. We go from 300km/h down to 70km/h in a matter of metres.

‘I'm looking forward to the Belgian Grand Prix. I've done a lot of work with my engineers after a disappointing result in Hungary and, generally, I think we're in much better shape going into this weekend.’

One to Watch: Las Ketchup

The hottest new singers on Lycos won't be found on MTV. Their CD isn't in stores yet. You can't hear them on most pop radio stations right now. But they're climbing up our search logs nonetheless. Who -- or what -- is Las Ketchup?

Las Ketchup are Pilar, Lola, and Lucia Munoz, a singing trio of attractive sisters from Cordoba, Spain. Their single, "Asereje" is a huge summer hit in Spain and across the world, especially in Latin America. "Asereje" has hit the top five in most Spanish-speaking countries, and their album is already platinum in Spain.

The band's weird name comes from their strong musical pedigree. The three sisters are daughters of a famous flamenco guitarist called Tomate. Thus, the name Las Ketchup, and the album title Hijas del Tomate, or "daughters of Tomate."

"Asereje" is a summer song about a summer song. It tells the story of Diego, who likes a popular English tune but doesn't know the words, so he pronounces them as gibberish. It's a novelty song, combined with a "Macarena"-like dance routine that is shown in the video. Hmmm, "Macarena" was also a summer hit in Europe that crossed over to America, it was catchy, the lyrics didn't make much sense. Could "Asereje" be the next "Macarena"?

Searches for the band seem to be coming from all over the globe -- we're getting searches from the U.S., Spanish-speaking nations like Mexico and Venezuela, even non-Spanish speaking countries like Germany, Italy, and Israel. And that doesn't even count searches on Terra U.S. for Spanish-speaking Americans, or any of the international Terra search engines across Latin America and Spain.

Last week, Las Ketchup got more searches on Lycos than much better known musicians including rapper Lil' Kim, rap-rocker Kid Rock, and country singer Faith Hill. Searches for the song title "Asereje" on Lycos.com (although not Lycos Music) were higher than searches for Eminem's "Without Me," Nelly's "Hot in Herre," and Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" -- combined.

Terra, the Spanish half of our company, is featuring the band both in Venezuela and in Spain. You can hear the song and download the video -- and get inundated by Venezuelan advertisements for Heinz ketchup.

Could this be the next "Macarena"? Or, like most European hits, will "Asereje" fizzle in the States? Only time will tell. The album Hijas del Tomate hits U.S. stores next Tuesday.

Villeneuve's Catch 22

Jacques Villeneuve has always been a very independent character and while this has made him a popular figure with race fans, it does have its drawbacks. Teams have never been happy with the amount of promotional work Jacques is willing to do and now that British American Racing is under a new management there is a desire to use the money he is due to be paid to help develop the team.

This makes sense for David Richards, the new boss of BAR. Villeneuve is good but not good enough to warrant the kind of money that has been paid in recent years. Richards is paying considerably less for Jenson Button and could get a nice cheap deal with Olivier Panis as well. In this way he can save $10-12m a year and that money can be used to build up the infrastructure of the team. Once Villeneuve was the key element in the team in terms of branding. He fitted the rebel image that Lucky Strike was trying to promote. But now the team is being rebranded and Villeneuve does not have to be part of that.

But BAR has made it very clear to him that it will honor his contract for 2003 if he forces the team to do so. But if he insists on the deal the team has also made it clear that there is no chance that he will be employed in 2004 and beyond. BAR is happy to keep him if he is willing to compromise on money and sign a longer contract but Jacques does not wish to do this. The danger for Jacques is that if he is seen to be more keen on making money than making the team competitive it will undermine his reputation in F1 circles and that will make it more difficult for him to get a drive in the future. A deal to go to CART would therefore be a way in which Jacques could get the money he wants and he should be able to return to winning ways in the United States. If he wishes then to return to F1 in the future he can do so.

Gerald Forsythe, the man who is thought to be offering Jacques a drive, is in an unusual situation. He is a BAR shareholder as well as running Players Forsythe Racing (which is half owned by British American Tobacco, BAR's parent company). In addition he is a shareholder and director of CART. The involvement of CART is important because the series needs some help at the moment.

On Tuesday CART stock dropped to $3.80 before bouncing back to close at $4.00. Until recently the stock was being traded at $16.00. This means that the value of the company is around $58.8m despite the fact that the most recent accounts revealed that CART has assets of around $120m. In any normal circumstance this would lead to a rush to buy the stock because, in effect, one is buying something which costs half what it is worth. But this is not happening and the only logical explanation of that is that the stock is now held by a small group of people who are not letting go of their shares and are waiting until other investors have given up hope and depart. This would then enable them to take the company off the stock exchange so that they can run it without the restrictions that listed companies face.

The big issue therefore is not the stock exchange but rather whether or not CART can convince teams to stay in the business and to do that they need to see how the series will recover and how they can all make a profit in the future. Signing up Villeneuve would do two things: it would send a message that CART is still a serious choice for a topline racing driver and it would increase the interest in the series both in North America and around the world.

Our sources in America say that CART is willing to help pay for the French-Canadian to join Players Forsythe Racing although Jacques and his manager Craig Pollock say that they have not received any offer from Forsythe, which is odd considering that Forsythe has spoken openly about getting Jacques.

The deal makes sense for everyone - except perhaps Villeneuve - but unless there is a good alternative for him in Formula 1 in 2004 it might be wisest for him to head to the United States.

Os olhos do mundo do automobilismo estão voltados este final de semana para o circuito Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Canadá. O motivo é que a CART correrá pela primeira vez em um mesmo circuito onde é disputado anualmente um GP de F1.

As duas categorias tem entre si uma certa animosidade, dividindo palmo a palmo popularidade, pilotos e resultados. Mas os champ cars, carros da CART, e os monopostos da F1 são diferentes em vários aspectos.

Ainda assim, o mundo se volta para ver em quanto será a diferença de tempos entre eles, o que faz do GP de Montreal, uma corrida memorável. Vários pilotos que estão hoje na F1 já passaram pela campeonato da CART, tais como Jacque Villeneuve e Juan Pablo Montoya.

“Será bom ver definitivamente as diferenças de tempos. Os carros de F1 serão mais rápidos, mas contam com mais ajudas eletrônicas e mais tecnologia que os champ cars”, disse Villeneuve, que está no Canadá eassistirá a corrida no circuito que leva o nome de seu pai.

A maior diferença está nos freios. O freio de carbono da F1 é muito mais rápido, e por isso que os carros da CART não são mais rápidos que os F1 nesta pista.

A enorme popularidade da F1 no Canadá, e precisamente em Montreal, é tanta que na última edição do evento que 117 mil pessoas estavam no autódromo no dia da corrida. Os dirigentes da CART esperam que isso aconteça também desta vez. Montoya por exemplo, acredita no mais absoluto êxito da prova.

Na CART o público fica muito perto dos pilotos e dos carros, o que definitivamente não acontece na F1 e acho que isso garante o sucesso do GP.

Ontem a noite foi um sarro, depois que saímos do hospital onde está o avô da minha amiga decidimos que queríamos ir ao cinema...isso eram 9 da noite.
Escolhimos o Villa Lobos que é na Marginal Pinheiros (o que é pertinho de onde estávamos) mas meu amigo errou as bolas e fomos parar na Marginal Tietê...(eu estava morrendo de dar risada, mas deu para colocar a conversa em dia)
Quando finalmente chegamos ao Shopping a única sessão que estava para começar era " About a Boy" como só eu tinha visto, e não me importaria ver outra vez, entramos na fila. A empolgação levou um balde de agua fria...a sala lotou na pessoa antes da gente. Tivémos a ótima idéia de sair correndo e não pagar o estacionamento. E Conseguimos!!
No carro decidimos ir para o Market Place (que fica do outro lado da Marginal...mas tudo bem), entramos já eram 21:55 e sempre tem uma sessão por volta das 22, certo?...errado!! No referido Cinemark todas começaram às 21:30. E o que fizemos? saimos correndo outra vez para não pagar estacionamento! acho que mais um shopping e tínhamos um recorde mundial...*rs*
Os três mortos de fome e sem destino...o que fizemos? Instituímos que a próxima parada tinha que durar mais que 20 minutos e não podíamos sair correndo...

Felipe Massa perde vaga na Sauber para a temporada 2003 de F-1
da Folha Online

A equipe Sauber anunciou hoje que o brasileiro Felipe Massa não continuará como titular para a próxima temporada do Mundial de F-1. Os dois escolhidos pela escuderia suíça são os alemães Nick Heidfeld e Heinz Harald Frentzen, contratado ontem.

O paulistano de 21 anos e estreante na categoria recebeu a notícia com naturalidade. Afirmou que ainda não decidiu o que irá fazer em 2003, mas revelou que tem negociado com outros times. Também não descartou aceitar a proposta de ser piloto de testes e reserva da Sauber.

Massa encontrou-se com Pete Sauber, dono da escuderia, nesta manhã. "Ele me ofereceu essa possibilidade. Agradeci e vamos estudar o convite, assim como estamos estudando as outras alternativas. Temos contatos com várias equipes, e meu empresário [Ricardo Tedeschi] já tem agendadas novas reuniões nesta semana".

O brasileiro pontuou em três provas nesta temporada. Foi sexto colocado na Malásia e no GP da Europa, realizado na Alemanha, e terminou em quinto na Espanha. Tem, portanto, quatro pontos, três a menos que seu companheiro de time, Nick Heidfeld.

22/08/2002 - Veja a comparação entre um carro de F-1 e um bólido da CART

Principais diferenças entre os carros da Fórmula 1 e da CART. Neste domingo, a comparação poderá ser feita na pista já que a Fórmula Mundial fará sua 13a etapa do ano no circuito Gilles Villeneuve, em Montreal, onde a F-1 também corre:

22/08/2002 - F-1 X CART: quem sai ganhando?

Acontece neste final de semana o Grande Prêmio de Montreal da CART e já está sendo inevitável uma comparação entre a categoria e a Fórmula 1, que desde 1978 compete na mesma pista.

A Federação Internacional de Automobilismo (FIA) vetava que corridas das duas categorias acontecessem no mesmo circuito, no entanto a regra mudou e os canadenses puderam organizar as duas provas.

Antes mesmo dos treinos livres que começam nesta sexta-feira, os pilotos já acreditam que a CART deverá ser cerca de oito segundos mais lenta, parte da culpa é atribuída aos pneus, que não suficientemente macios.

No GP do Canadá da F-1 neste ano, Juan Pablo Montoya, da Williams, foi o pole position com um tempo de 1min12s836 e Michael Schumacher, da Ferrari, vencedor da prova, teve uma média horária de 195,68 km/h.

"Nossos carros deverão perder em uns oito segundos. Temos que esperar os treinos classificatórios do sábado, pois na sexta-feira a pista ainda está muito suja, não dá para comparar", explicou o brasileiro Tony Kanaan.

Até hoje apenas uma comparação pode ser feita, é do GP de Detroit. Em 1988 o pole position e vencedor Ayrton Senna registrou uma média de 143,96 km/h na classificação, enquanto em 1989, Michael Andretti, ao marcar a pole, fez uma média de 142,41 km/h.

Para outro brasileiro, Cristiano da Matta, líder do campeonato da CART, há uma explicação para tanta diferença. "Isso se deve, principalmente, à tecnologia de cada uma. Uma equipe da CART tem cerca de 20 milhões de dólares de orçamento, enquanto uma da F-1 tem mais ou menos 200 milhões", afirma.


Todt diz que Ferrari não tem culpa de "tédio" na temporada

O francês Jean Todt, diretor-esportivo da Ferrari, alfinetou os adversários da escuderia de Maranello nesta quinta-feira. Para ele, se a temporada 2002 de F-1 está chata e monótona por causa do domínio dos carros italianos, a culpa não é do time, e sim de seus adversários.

"Se os pilotos de outras equipes não conseguem brigar contra os nossos, que culpa temos? Não queremos que nossos pilotos briguem entre si, e sim contra os outros. Assim é a nossa filosofia. Se eles não conseguem, paciência", disparou Todt.

Williams confirma Montoya até fim da temporada de 2004

A equipe Williams de F-1 divulgou nesta quinta-feira um comunicado onde confirma a renovação do contrato com o colombiano Juan Pablo Montoya por mais duas temporadas. Agora o contrato de Montoya irá até o fim de 2004, a exemplo do que ocorre com seu companheiro de equipe, o alemão Ralf Schumacher.

"Ele tem um talento excepcional e com este contrato de longo prazo, Juan Pablo terá estabilidade para se empenhar ainda mais", declarou o chefe do time, o inglês Frank Williams.

Já o colombiano estava bastante satisfeito com o anúncio.

"Estou muito feliz com isto, pois não restam dúvidas sobre a competência da Williams e da BMW. Sei que teremos no futuro plenas condições de vencer um campeonato", disse o piloto.

22/08/2002 - Button quer carros maiores na F-1

O piloto Jenson Button, da Renault, levantou a bandeira dos pilotos mais altos, como Justin Wilson, que não podem correr na Fórmula 1 por não caberam no cockpit.

De acordo com Button, os carros da categoria deveriam ser maiores para que não houvesse este problema. "Quando eu estava negociando um posto para a próxima temporada, me disseram que sou muito alto, e eu tenho 1m82", afirmou indignado.

Wilson iria correr pela Minardi no GP de Budapeste, substituindo Alex Yoong, mas não pode devido ao seu tamanho. "Fiquei chateado por Wilson. Acho que os carros deveriam ser construídos para pilotos de dois metros. É injustiça dar vantagem para os mais baixos, já que eles são também os mais leves", lamentou.

CART can pay to have Villeneuve in 2003

Craig Pollock - future owner of Arrows?

It appears that a new owner may be on the horizon for the financially troubled Arrows team -- former British American Racing team principal Craig Pollock.

In July, Tom Walkinshaw gave the first clues that there was interest from a third party in the purchase of the Arrows Formula One team. "We have new investors waiting to step in and secure our future, but we still have to come to agreement with existing shareholders," commented team principal Tom Walkinshaw. (See "Critical talks continue for Arrows" for more details.)

Arrows made more news during the French GP when the team sat out the first practice day. According to driver at that time, Heinz-Harald Frentzen: "As far as I see the problem is that there is no agreement over to whom the team will be sold. We just have to wait until Morgan Grenfell makes a decision. The future is not yet safe, and we just have to wait now for news."

Problems continued to arise with the team when, in early August, Frentzen was released from his contract with Arrows. This opened the door to further questions: would the Orange Arrows team run at Hungary, who were the potential buyers and why were the shareholders dragging their feet on this issue?

Today, the rumors of Craig Pollock being one of the interested parties were confirmed by the former BAR boss. Pollock informed the Swiss media outlet Le Matin that he has been in negotiations with Arrows boss Tom Walkinshaw for several months. He has recently made a second offer.

"I began the discussions four months ago. I quoted a price and then withdrew because the figure given by Arrows did not match the one I had made. I then contacted Tom Walkinshaw again, and I remade an offer on Thursday evening. I am now waiting for his answer," said Pollock.

Pollock states he is confident of the possible acceptance and he placed no date on the acceptance of his offer to Walkinshaw. He realizes that Arrows needs to sort out current issues first.

"I am very realistic. The purchase of Arrows is not something that I want so much that it prevents me from sleeping," Pollock stated. "If it does not happen, at least I would have tried, but I would say there is an 80 percent chance that it will happen.

"I don't think Arrows intends to go to the next Grand Prix unless a solution is found by then. And the next race is on Sunday."

Currently, Pollock remains as personal manager to Jacques Villeneuve, BAR driver. The Canadian driver's future in Formula One has recently been open to discussion. Is there a possibility that if Pollock is successful in his offer, that Villeneuve will be the driver for the 2003 season? era só o que me faltava!

O inglês David Richards, chefe da BAR, disse que o time pode mudar de nome em 2003, e que as negociações neste sentido já estão em estágio avançado com a British American Tobacco, patrocinadora oficial do time.

"O principal problema para se trocar de marca é o alto custo que isto implica, mas como a F-1 é um esporte que oferece uma alta visibilidade, creio que será uma mudança positiva", declarou Richards.

Vejam esta do maninhoontem foi a despedida da minha amiga que vai para a Holanda, lá no O´malleys
quando deu umas 22:40 eu começei a ficar cansada e ele nada de querer ir embora. Fiquei nessa luta até que saimos de lá às 00:30.
Chegamos em casa e qdo a mãe veio perguntar o que tinha acontecido ele responde na maior cara de pau:
- Ah foi a Lole que não quis vir embora antes e eu tive que ficar esperando senão tinha chego mais cedo!

Hj vinha no ônibus e uma moça contava para a outra que ia faltar amanhã pois tinha que ir fazer um hemograma completo, a outra dizia "nossa! isso deve ser horrível de fazer" e a primeira respondia nem sei menina deve levar umas 3 horas...
eu quase caí na risada, pois o hemograma completo é um exame feito no sangue da moça, quem faz é a pessoa do laboratório e demora 3 minutos para tirar o sangue......incrível como um nome dificil incita as pessoas a pensar em cada coisa!

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

Rio - É época de boatos nos bastidores da Fórmula 1, de comentários e especulações sobre negociações e trocas de pilotos entre as equipes.O piloto alemão Heinz-Harald Frentzen é um dos mais citados. Primeiro, falou-se que ele assumiria uma vaga
na equipe Jordan, no lugar do piloto italiano Giancarlo Fisichella, depois comentou-se que Frentzen ia assumir a vaga do escocês Allan McNish na equipe Toyota. Nada disso aconteceu. E os rumores da vez dão conta que Frentzen vai ocupar o lugar do brasileiro Felipe Massa, na equipe suíça Sauber. Segundo informações do site Planet F1, atribuídas à revista inglesa Autosport, Frentzen assumiria o lugar de Massa nas cinco provas restantes desta temporada da Fórmula 1. Felipe Massa foi pivô, no último Grande Prêmio da Alemanha, de um drama conhecido da torcida brasileira: troca de posições dentro da pista. O brasileiro foi forçado a abrir para que seu companheiro de equipe, o alemão Nick Heidfeld, passasse. Massa chegou a questionar, sem sucesso, a ordem com o
chefe da equipe, Peter Sauber. Durante três voltas Sauber e Massa discutiram a determinação para troca, até que Sauber resolveu deixar claro o que pretendia gritando pelo rádio para que o brasileiro abrisse passagem. Isso gerou um mal-estar na equipe, agravado pelo fato de o piloto brasileiro ainda não ter contrato renovado para o próximo ano. Suspeitava-se que a equipe já estava decidida a não renovar com Massa para a próxima temporada. Para piorar a situação de Massa, o alemão Heinz-Harald Frentzen tem estreitas ligações com Peter Sauber. Na ocasião, o alemão terminou a prova na terceira posição. ''Estou conversando com algumas equipes e pensando sobre o futuro. Não posso falar no momento sobre isso, mas ainda penso muito na minha carreira. Caso contrário, teria anunciado a minha aposentadoria em Hockenheim'', declarou Frentzen.

A MAGIA DA COMUNICAÇÃO

Havia um cego que pedia esmola à entrada do Viaduto do Chá, em São Paulo. Todos os dias passava por ele, de manhã e à noite, um publicitário que deixava sempre alguns centavos no chapéu do pedinte. O cego trazia pendurado no escoço um cartaz com a frase: CEGO DE NASCIMENTO. UMA ESMOLA POR FAVOR. Certa manhã o publicitário teve uma idéia, virou o letreiro do cego ao
contrario e escreveu outra frase.
À noite depois de um dia de trabalho perguntou ao cego como é que tinha sido seu dia. O cego respondeu, muito contente:
ATÉ PARECE MENTIRA, MAS HOJE FOI UM DIA EXTRAORDINÁRIO. TODOS QUE PASSAVAM POR MIM DEIXAVAM ALGUMA COISA. AFINAL O QUE É QUE O SENHOR ESCREVEU NO LETREIRO???
O publicitário havia escrito uma frase breve, mas com sentido e carga emotiva suficientes para convencer os que passavam a deixarem algo para o cego.
A frase era: EM BREVE CHEGARÁ A PRIMAVERA E EU NÃO PODEREI VÊ-LA.
A maioria das vezes não importa O QUE você diz, mas COMO você diz, que PALAVRAS você usa, por isso tome cuidado em como falar com as pessoas, pois isso tem um peso positivo ou negativo naquilo que você quer dizer e nos resultados.

Eu até que gostei do Circuito novo, ver todos pertinho e saindo do traçado, tendo trabalho e a ultrapassagem do JP!!

Villeneuve nega ano de descanso

Na onda de aposentadorias ao final desta temporada, está Jacques Villeneuve. Rumores relacionam o canadense a um ano de descanso, para apenas depois voltar a correr. Mas ele nega.

"Eu nunca pensei em não estar na BAR na próxima temporada", disse Villeneuve. "Não no momento. A menos que me dêem uma razão, algo que faça sentido, então poderei considerar. Mas agora não tenho razão alguma para renegociar algo que já tenho garantido", explicou o piloto.

Button acredita que parceria com Villeneuve será interessante

Jenson Button estréia em 2003 na escuderia BAR, ao lado de Jacques Villeneuve, já campeão da Fórmula 1. Fato este que não assusta o jovem inglês. Ele acredita apenas que será interessante.

"Eu já tive três companheiros de equipe bastante competitivos, especialmente os dois italiano (Giancarlo Fisichella e Jarno Trulli). Eu conhece o Jacques como pessoa, fora das pistas, mas não sei como ele é como companheiro de equipe", afirma Button.

"Será interessante e estou ansioso pelo desafio. Será de empolgar e acredito que a gente vá se dar muito bem, não posso ver motivo para ser o contrário. Ambos somos rápidos", acrescentou.

Pelo menos a Vicky vai poder vê-lo em Interlagos e tirar vááááárias fotos!! =)
